Using Internet Websites for accessing Medical Information.
The internet is becoming an easily-accessible font of helpful information for people who want to take responsibility for their own wellbeing. However, you can't believe everything you read on the Web! Look for sites that have good credentials, where medical information is regularly reviewed by experts. On the other hand, by surfing the web you may find out something useful that your doctor wasn't taught. In the USA, UK, Australia and to a much lesser extent in NZ, national "Support – Information" Groups exist for the major diseases – asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart etc. Patient 'chat rooms' enable you to communicate worldwide with other sufferers of a specific illness.
We have listed some of these and also a selection of our doctors' favourite sites, often with information integrating orthodox and complementary therapies.
A good online directory for support groups is www.everybody.co.nz/supportgroups.aspx
